Supporting the Immune system

Along with rest, proper nutrition and plenty of sunshine, there are herbs that can help to support our immune systems. Please NOTE: There is no magic pill or formula! If you don't get the rest that you need, don't eat right and live a sedentary indoor lifestyle, no herbal can help you! It takes lifestyle changes to get healthy and stay healthy!

Let's look at a few herbs that can help to support the immune system.

Elder (Sambucus nigra) - this is one of my very favorites!!! So much so that I transplanted some wild elder into our orchard yard so that I always have an organic supply that I know has not been chemically treated.

A variety of herbal medications are derived from different parts of the elder plant. An herbal remedy made from the flowering tops of the plant are used in the treatment of disorders and complaints such as chronic congestion in the respiratory tract. The detoxification of the body is also achieved by taking herbal remedies made from the flowering tops of the elder flowers, this remedy promotes perspiration and the production of urine in the affected individual, as a general remedy, the flowering tops of the elder aid the rapid elimination of metabolic waste products from the body. Elderberry may help treat cold and flu symptoms by reducing congestion and possibly making you sweat more.  (read more here and here.)

Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis)- Another favorite of mine! Ah! Just the smell of a crushed leaf is so refreshing!

The lemon balm when taken in the form of a hot infusion can induce sweating in the body, this helps in reducing fevers and makes it a very good remedy for many childhood infections, such as colds and flu, as well as various coughs and catarrh which tends to affect children. The lemon balm also has potent action as a relaxant and possesses mucous reducing properties, these powers are very helpful during cases of acute and chronic bronchitis. Lemon Balm is anti-viral, so the tea is great to drink if you’re feeling under the weather.  The hot tea brings on a sweat that is good for relieving colds, flus and fevers and an anti-viral agent has been found that combats mumps, cold sores and other viruses.  James Duke mentions that Lemon Balm can help with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Shingles, due to the anti-viral action.

Honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium / Lonicera japonica) -  This one is known to most folks as a 'smell good'. But it is way more than that!

The traditional use of the honeysuckle in European herbal medicine was as a remedy for asthma and related respiratory disorders that affected the chest. The remedies made from the flowers of the honeysuckle have an anti-spasmodic effect, this brings relief from chronic coughs and was traditionally used as a treatment for asthma and related respiratory disorders. The remedy made from the jin yin hua plant is also used to bring down elevated temperatures in a body wracked by fever. Honeysuckle is used for infections and inflammations and has broad spectrum antimicrobial activity.   (read more here and here )

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) - Yarrow's sterile and anti-inflammatory qualities help in healing infections. yarrow is a superb medication that helps in getting relief from fevers and contagions like colds, flu, coughs as well as sore throats. Yarrow is also beneficial in removing heat and toxins from the system through increased perspiration.  Used since antiquity for headaches, fevers, colds, and influenza. (read more here andhere )

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) - Another familiar herb. Gingerbread anyone?

Ginger has an ancient reputation as a carrier herb enhancing the absorption of other herbs.  You are what you eat is an old adage, but are you what you eat or what you absorb? (Need we say more?) Ginger has been shown to kill the influenza virus by improving the body’s ability to fight off infection by boosting the immune system.

So, in building and supporting the immune system, you can add these herbs to your lifestyle changes. You can add them all as separate supplemental herbs OR you can add them as one extract!
